This song has been in holiday movies for years! I first heard it in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. It's really what allows the whole movie to continue. As the plane to NYC is taking off, Kevin puts on his headphones and misses the pre-flight announcement, including the plane's destination, and this Tom Petty classic is playing. It's also appeared in Four Christmases and Jingle All the Way. All three of those movies are some of my holiday favorites.
I really like this song, because it's different from any other Christmas song you'll hear. Even other Christmas songs that fit the same style or genre as this one don't have that Tom Petty sound. More importantly, though, I think it's the content of the song that makes it stand out. It's a look at the routines we go through at Christmas, the ones we claim to hate and secretly cherish. It's those little moments that make the holidays special.
