Sara Smile - Hall & Oates

Random Theme: Songs Named After Girls

The second song Brian mentions in the clip I posted Wednesday to start all this is "Roxanne" by The Police. I already posted that one a few months ago. The next few names he mentions and their corresponding songs are below. I don't care for some of the songs Brian mentions, but I'll still list them as I get to them and just post the ones I do like.

Sara is the next name on the list, and it creates a list all on its own. Even if we restrict the list to songs that are titled with only the one word, Sara or Sarah, there are still six somewhat popular songs that fit the bill. A song with the title "Sara" has been recorded by Fleetwood Mac, Bob Dylan and BoA. Similarly, songs with the one word title of "Sarah" belong to The Slackers, Thin Lizzy, and Ween. When we open the door to songs that include one spelling or the other of the name somewhere in the title, it's more like fifteen or twenty songs. So, I decided to open that door, and I chose to go with "Sara Smile" by Hall and Oates.

This is a pretty standard/well known tune. The song was released in 1976 and quickly became the group's first top ten. It climbed all the way to #4 on the Hot 100. The song was inspired by Daryl Hall's girlfriend, whom he was with five years before writing the song and stayed with until 2001. An almost thirty year relationship!
