Lola - The Kinks

Random Theme: Songs Named After Girls

Eric Clapton's "Layla" is the next song on the list, but I've already done a post about it.

After that...

I don't like this song at all to be honest. It's just over the silly borderline for me. I like to have fun with music, but I like to hear fun music that's clever or at least a good song that comes out funny. This is neither of those things. Actually, growing up at the time I did, I was introduced to lots of songs by way of Weird Al Yankovic. For the longest time when I was younger, I didn't even know that he was writing new lyrics to other people's songs. Then, when I learned that factoid, I found lots of really good music. This song, however, seems it should've been one of his tunes from the beginning. His parody, "Yoda", is posted below. The subject matter for the original is no stranger than Al's song, though. The song is all about an encounter with a possible transvestite/transgender person, never really saying which exactly. It was a topic that carried the song to a #9 spot on the Hot 100, though.

The more interesting topic in my opinion... Yankovic is way more intelligent than he's given credit for most of the time. The majority of people that are really, really funny are of high intelligence. For example, Yankovic started kindergarten a year early, skipped the second grade, graduated valedictorian of his high school, and earned a degree in architecture from California Polytechnic State University. On top of that, he has sold more than 12 million albums, written more than 150 original and parody songs, performed more than 1000 live shows, and earned three Grammy Awards. He's even produced music videos for groups like The Black Crowes and Ben Folds. That's not bad for a guy that sings about Yoda. With all that in mind, you'll find one of his original songs below the "Yoda" video. It's one of my favorites.
