This is your standard fifties tune in a doo-wop style. It's catchy, and that's really all it took to have a hit song...for that matter, that's all it takes now. Substance isn't nearly as important as marketability. That's always been true for music, though. Even groups that do have substance and talent are marketable in one way or more. You can't just have good music and a good sound. You have to have a gimmick, too. Something that will make people want to buy your music. A good hook will always do the trick to get you started.
The falsetto of Four Seasons' front man Frankie Valli was a great hook for the band to hang on, and it was showcased in this song, their first #1 hit. The song was originally intended to use the name Jackie instead of Sherry. The song's writer, Bob Gaudio, wanted it to be a tribute to the First Lady, Jackie Kennedy. After a change or two in the studio, the name Sherry was finally settled on as a final choice. It was named after the daughter of Gaudio's friend and radio DJ, Jack Spector.
