Big Dreams in a Small Town - Restless Heart

I know this from experience, so, don't let anyone tell you different. People who live in a small town feel one of three ways about it. One, they can't wait to get out of there and see the world, away from all the backward, "stupid" people who just don't get them. Two, they imagine living their whole lives there, and they see nothing wrong with going about things like everyone around them always has. Three, they have dreams they know they can't pursue where they are, and they know they will have to reluctantly leave or some other variation of reluctantly leaving their home town and all they know. The funny thing is that out of those three, the two types of people who leave often wind up coming back, because they never wanted to go in the first place or realize things weren't as bad as they thought.

This song is about that realization. Growing up, you might have big dreams, plans to change the world. As you go through life and follow those dreams, though, you find that the simpler life you left behind isn't so bad. Don't get me wrong; there are those who follow their dreams and see them to the fullest, never coming back home on a permanent basis, but those cases are few and far between. "Home" is a feeling that you can't capture anywhere else for most people.

The song was a hit for Restless Heart in 1989, hitting the #3 spot on the country charts. It was the title track for the group's third album. The album included a few of my other favorite cuts from the band, including "The Bluest Eyes in Texas". I fell in love with that song when I was very young, and still love it today. It took a few years and a deeper understanding of the song's meaning to appreciate "Big Dreams".
