Metallica released their version of this more than 200-year-old Irish folk song in '98. The song is about a highwayman who robs a government official and is betrayed by a woman. It first became a hit in popular music for The Dubliners in the sixties. Their take is a far more traditional sounding version. Metallica is covering the Thin Lizzy version that was a hit in the UK and Ireland seventies. I think the heavier sound fits the song very well.
