Merry Go 'Round - Kacey Musgraves

Being from a small town in WV, I identify closely with several topics in this song, and the ones I don't identify with, I at least understand them. Specifically, I completely understand the concept of winding up alone if you're not married with kids by 21. It's such a strange concept to me. If you want to get married, get married, but don't do it just because you're "supposed" to do it. If you want to have kids, have kids, but don't do it just because you're not "doing anything else with your life". If you dive into either of those two things for any other reason than it being what you want to do, your success will often times not be the same.

Don't feel like you have to do things and grow up the same way your parents and grandparents did. If they're responsible and actually reflect on their own lives, they'll probably offer you the same advice. There is no set time table you have to follow. Do things at your own pace, or do your own thing. Don't fit into that cookie cutter.

Musgraves probably understands all of this as well or better than me, since the pressures for marriage and kids is usually more intense for women. She was born and grew up in Golden, TX. If you've never heard of it, don't be surprised. The area is about thirty-five miles north of Tyler, TX, which may not be any more familiar than Golden. Golden is famous for their sweet potatoes, though. Musgraves released three albums independently before taking a shot at the TV series Nashville Star. It paid off for her, earning a deal with Mercury Nashville, and releasing the album Same Trailer Different Park, from which this song was released.
