Keith is not afraid by any means to show his American spirit. With songs like "American Soldier", "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue", and this one, he's shown us more than once what he thinks it means to be American. While "Courtesy" showed to provoke some controversy, it defined the way a lot of Americans felt after September 11. The other two songs are direct reflections upon specific ways of life in our country. I'd personally love to see a few more like this join his repertoire.
The song was co-written by Keith, but it started in the minds of his frequent collaborators Bobby Pinson and Scott Reeves. Pinson says that he and Reeves started working on the song, and after getting a bit of it down, they realized it sound like something Keith would record. Pinson took it to him, they finished writing the song, and, tough it almost got left off the album due to the number of other patriotic songs Keith has released, it became the first single form his album Clancy's Tavern.
