This had me almost mesmerized while watching it. A lot of drum solos go on forever, and even as a drummer, it's hard for me to get on board with them. I don't care for most long open drum solos, because they seem so unstructured and disconnected. It's like they're not thought out at all and have no structure. I'd much rather seem a drummer solo around the music. I like this one a lot.
Harrison is most well known as the drummer for Porcupine Tree, a British rock group. The group was formed in 1987 by Steven Wilson, and Chris Maitland served as the group's drummer until 2001. The band's tenth studio album, The Incident, was released in 2009, and the band has been on a hiatus since that time, allowing Wilson and the others to focus on their solo careers and other projects.
The video above is from David Letterman's drum week. The song was originally recorded by Jaco Pastorius, a very influential jazz musician. Harrison is one of several great percussionists to appear on the show. If you watch Letterman regularly, it should be no surprise that he would be interested in featuring drums for a whole week. The video below will give you an idea of his love for the instrument.
