This song is appropriate for me today. I don't do a lot of stuff out on the road, but I'd love to do more, just waiting on the opportunities, well, not waiting, actively looking. It's gonna be a full weekend of music, though, and I'm looking forward to it a lot.
Thursday night started things off with a late night rehearsal with Dustin Burchett and Southern Ground in Grayson, KY, which is about an hour from where I'm staying, right now. We had to get in a little practice, though. We've got a show on Saturday for which we need to be prepared (see below).
After coming off of a rehearsal that ran until about 9:30 last night, today I'm on the road with Bobby Cyrus headed for Guntersville, AL for a show. We're all cramming in the passenger van with our equipment from Ashland, KY to Winchester, KY where we'll catch the tour bus for the rest of the trip. It'll be a lot more comfy than last time when we took the van the whole way. We met in Ashland at 7:00 AM! After playing a two hour show later tonight, we'll turn it around and head back, hitting Ashland around 9:00 AM or so on Saturday morning.
Saturday evening, I'll be in Grayson, KY again for the Carter County Fair. It's the same venue where the Carter County Thunder was recently held, the show where we got rained out of our performance, but the weather is (knock on wood) looking good for this weekend. Hopefully we'll get to play our whole show!
After the Fair, I'll turn it around home, and I'll be out again for a benefit concert on Sunday in Ashland, honoring a local radio personality that recently passed away. Chuck Black was a good guy, and regardless of whether or not I'm playing Sunday, I'll be at the event. That's a lot of music for one weekend.
Starting Thursday evening, it was Huntington to Grayson to Huntington to Ashland to Guntersville to Ashland to Huntington to Grayson to Huntington to Ashland to Huntington. That's also a lot of miles for one weekend. Basically, I'll get a short break in traveling and playing on Saturday afternoon, and I'll have enough time to get some sleep on Sunday to catch up, I hope. I wouldn't have it any other way, though.
The song, of course, was originally written and performed by Willie Nelson in conjunction with his starring role in Honeysuckle Rose. The exec producer on the film asked him to write a song about life on the road, which Nelson did on the same flight on which he was asked to write it, and he penned it out on a airsick bag. It became a #1 hit and one of Nelson's most recognizable songs. After joining forces with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson to form The Highwaymen, the song, obviously, became part of their repertoire.
