First, I can see where the judges might have been a little upset with this guy, especially the crack he made toward Brian McFadden. For you those of you who don't know, he was a member of the Irish boy band Westlife. They had a hit or two in the early 2000's, particularly well known, and hated by classic rock fans, was their version of Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl". So, Campbell's crack about not trying to be in a boy band hit home there. With that said, up to that point, I think he was just trying to joke around with the judges and the audience. I think the judges overreacted or misunderstood when he made his remark about acting like they weren't there. It doesn't really matter why they got upset, they did.
I can totally understand his frustration with them. I am often misuderstood by people I meet. My shyness often comes across as arogance, my directness and dislike of small talk comes off as rudeness, and my get things done demeanor makes me seem like I don't know how to have fun, and when I do make jokes, people often have no idea I'm joking due to my dry sense of humor. I've learned to live with it. What I'm saying is, I think the judges took this guy the wrong way from the start, and he tries to explain that but gets cut off before being able to explain himself. Really, though, if they based their judgement on his performance alone, he would've been just fine. There's a link in the YouTube video to go to his return performance.
