Rolling Stone ranked this tune as the number one greatest rock and roll Christmas song in 2010. While it is a great tune, and I like it quite a bit, I don't know if that's the truth. While they attributed the success of the song to original singer Darlene Love's emotion and vocal power, I don't think the song itself is strong enough to hold that position compared to some of the other great rock n' roll Christmas jams out there.
Upon its release, the song wasn't all that successful. It has been popular since then through the many artists that have covered it. Along with the Carey version above, Bon Jovi, Cher, Diesel, R.E.M., Joey Ramone, and many others have taken their shot at the song. Carey's album Merry Christmas, on which the song appears, has sold more than 200,000 copies, making it one of the most successful covers of the original.
