This song was originally cut by Charles Brown, and it has been recorded by countless artists. This is my favorite take on the tune, though. The Eagles almost always win the "which version is the best" battle. Brown's version of the song managed to snag a #76 spot on the charts, a decent number for a Christmas song. On the other hand, in 1978, eighteen years after Brown's version was released, The Eagles took the song to #18.
The song deals with being along on Christmas, a phenomenon that I think is far more prevalent than we might realize. Specifically, though, the song is referencing a romantic loss. The song pleads with the narrator's lover to come home for Christmas. Even if you're surrounded by family, being single for the holidays isn't easy.
