The first time I heard this song was through a cover by Howard Huntsberry. It was included on the Ghostbusters 2 soundtrack and appears in the move as the guys make the Statue of Liberty walk down the streets of NYC. Looking back at things and having typed that sentence just now, I guess the sequel isn't really as good as the first movie, but as ridiculous as that scene is (see below), there were still lots of great jokes and moments throughout, courtesy of Bill Murray, mostly. I digress.
The original song by Wilson was released in 1967, and it became a #1 R&B hit. It also took the #6 spot on the Hot 100. The backing track of the tune was recorded a year earlier. After hearing it, Wilson wanted to sing the song like a ballad, but producer Carl Davis insisted it had to be up-tempo. He even told Wilson that he'd sing it that way himself and sell a million copies if Wilson didn't want to do it.
