Country Must Be Country Wide - Brantley Gilbert

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8peBUdlUNmM]

There is this sub-genre of country music that is mainly made up of new, young artists, and it seems like every song they release sounds the same. With that said, I'll say this: I still like the message in some of the songs and don't believe it's their fault they are all copies of one another. It's what sells, so, it's what the labels want to hear.

This song has a message in it that I've been preaching on for a long time. Country isn't a place; it's a way of life. There's a difference between country and hick (though in this song they intermingle some of the concepts). What country really is, people don't think of it as country anymore. Country isn't a big truck, sleeveless flannels, a big dip in your mouth and getting smashed every weekend. That's what people have turned country into to make it acceptable to act how they want.

Country also isn't distorted guitars, loud drums, and mentioning at least one country great in every song you release. Don't get me wrong, I like some of those things, and there's definitely some country influence in that mix that makes up this new style, and mixing styles is how we got the music to which people have always listened. It's just not country. If you want country, listen to George Strait, Alan Jackson, Alabama...even Garth Brooks was more country than a lot of today's stuff.

Again, I'm not trashing the music. I wouldn't have posted the song if I didn't like it. Let's just not call a hippopotamus a fish because it spends some time in the water.
