This group has a handful of songs that I like a lot. I thought for sure I'd had them in the blog before, but it's getting harder and harder to remember. I guess I should just trust the search feature...I don't...
I considered "Elvira," "American Made," "Dig a Little Deeper," and "Gonna Take a Lot of River" for this blog, and I'd recommend them all if you haven't heard them. I chose this one because it's probably the lesser known of the tunes and not quite as country as some of the others. This is another one of those songs where all the parts work together just right. I love the groove in this song that all those parts create.
One of the things that garnered a lot of attention for the group was Richard Sterban's ridiculous bass voice. It's not just that he sings so low; it's so clear, too. I've actually included a video below of Elvira being performed by the group and gospel singer Tim Duncan coming up to sing the infamous "oom poppa mow mow" bass solo only to have Sterban take it even lower. The only other bass singer I've ever heard and thought fit in with what he was doing is Barry Carl (no longer a member of the group) known from his fun with the group Rockapella.
Update: The Tim Duncan video is no longer available. In place, here are the Boys on the Marty Stuart Show. If you don't have a sub connected, you really can't get the full effect of Sterban's vocal.
