Domino - Van Morrison

Morrison has written lots of music in lots of different styles. His most popular tune is probably "Brown Eyed Girl," but as a musician that often plays bars and clubs, I'm way beyond the ability to listen to that song very often. It's almost in the same boat as "Freebird" or "Keep Your Hands to Yourself." Not that those are the only ones, there's a long list of songs that are bar standards that most musicians dread playing. Thanfully, Morrison's songbook stretches much, much further than that.

Not that those overplayed songs aren't good songs, they are! Otherwise, they wouldn't get overplayed. The problem is that so often they overshadow even better songs that don't get any play at all. "Domino" is one that I very rarely hear covered. That's a shame, too, because the one band I've been in that did cover it always got an excellent reaction to the song. It's kind of understandable that a lot of bands don't cover this one, because it's got a lot going on, including a pretty substantial horn part. If you don't have the horns, you have to find a way to replace that sound, which isn't always easy to do.
