It's easy to see why this song has become the hit that it has. It's a weird blend of different styles. The lyrics sound like something from a Zeppelin tune, and the music is something between Americana and Bluegrass. The group's other stuff tends to lean more toward the Bluegrass side of things, though. It's more of a Newgrass style, but it's been a crazy crossover hit, taking the #1 spot on the Hot Country Songs chart and #15 on the Hot 100. You can hear people singing along to it in any bar across the country, though, no matter where it is or the kind of venue it is.
This song was originally intended to be a Bob Dylan tune. He wrote only the chorus and never finished working up the rest of the song. Ketch Secor, one of the Old Crow's founding members, wrote verses around Dylan's chorus. The song has since pretty much become the band's signature tune. I'd personally like to hear a slightly different take on it with some drums, maybe a little more up-tempo.
