Brian Setzer is more commonly known for the Brian Setzer Orchestra, but his first big success was with this group. The Stray Cats was just a trio as you can see. I've listened to their music before, but I never really looked into the group any. The standing up while playing the drums gimmick (that's what I think of it as) is not seen very often unless you count Uncle Jesse on Full House. I am a rockabilly fan, though; so, I dig this version of the tune.
The original cut of the song was somewhat rockabilly, but you could really hear a lot of the jazz influence there was in early rock and roll. The drums were light with brushes on the studio recording, and the upright bass was really smooth, too. The original song was released and written by Gene Vincent. He co-wrote the song with his manager, Bill Davis. Well, that's one version of the story. Another version claims that he wrote the melody while Donald Graves, whom he met in a hospital in Norfolk, VA while recovering from a motorcycle accident, wrote the lyrics. We may never actually know how things actually went down.
