This is one of those groups that rode the popularity of one song in the US. While "The Final Countdown" came first, "Carrie" was a #3 hit, while the former only reached #8. In other areas of the world, "Final Countdown" was the far more popular of the two songs. It reached #1 in several countries, including the band's homeland, Sweden. Originally written as a more acoustic song, before going into the studio, the full band arrangement was worked out and decided on for recording.
I was initially introduced to the song when I bought Monster Ballads in high school. It was a collection of power ballads from groups like Europe, Whitesnake, and Poison. At the time I had been seeing a girl named Carrie, and we had a rocky on/off relationship, so, the tune had a little extra meaning for me. That seems like a hundred years ago now, but it's really only been about ten. It's funny how time distorts as is passes.
