I'm going to end my "songs named after girls" theme with this one. This song was written about the singer Dorothy Sloop. She went by the stage name "Sloopy." The McCoys were the second group to release the song, but not the last by far. The first group to record the song - then titled "My Girl Sloopy" - was The Vibrations. Since then it has been covered by The Ventures, Arsenio Rodriguez, The Supremes, The Kingsmen, Little Caesar and the Consuls, The Yardbirds, Saving Jane, Jan & Dean, David Porter, Lieutenant Pigeon, and Die Toten Hosen.
Needless to say, it's been a very popular song over the years. It's also been adopted as Ohio's official state rock song. Ohio State University has a long tradition with the song as well, and I've posted a recording of their marching band performing the song, a capella at first and then with instruments. It's a very cool concept.
