The Ride - David Allan Coe

My favorite songs, as I've mentioned before, are ones that tell a story. This one is all about a hitchhiker's encounter with the ghost of a very well known artist. I won't say whom, just in case you've never heard the song. I wouldn't want to spoil it. Anyway... I played this song with a band, and we hit it just a little heavier with a slightly more modern feel. I like the original, but I dug the changes we made, too.

The song was written by Gary Gentry and J.B. Detterline Jr. In an interview with Billboard Magazine, Gentry told a reporter that he felt like the song was "meant to be." He, as much as everyone else that's ever heard the song, feels the eerie overtones it has. He also told a story about performing the song at the Opry and having all the lights and power go out unexpectedly during the verse where he mentions the name of the ghost in the song. True or not, that's a good story.
