I am in no way preaching that Moore is country. I don't keep up with him well enough to know. What I will say is that this song is a country song. I've written a bit in the past about how country isn't country anymore. A lot of people attribute that to the music itself. Well, music evolves and changes; it's a living, breathing thing that will never stay the same. So, I understand that country won't sound the same as it always has. Yes, a the fiddle and steel and the twang of a Telecaster are part of what makes country music what it is. However, if you want to crank up the bass and distortion, that's fine with me. The problem, in my opinion, is the subject matter.
Country music anymore seems to be only about the party and the beer. Don't get wrong country has always had its party songs, but that's ALL it seems like it's about anymore. You very rarely get a song that has depth to it or has anything to do with actually being country or tells a story. Those are the three things country music is about to me. This song covers the middle topic there: what it is to be country. A lot of new country tries to take that route, but falls short, only describing what people think it is to be country.
The song itself is good, too, musically. I like the build up that happens right from the beginning. The song starts with just guitar, adds a little drum action and lead guitar the second time around, then bass the third time. Then, we get the full band hammering the groove. It works really well, especially when you get to the chorus/bridge and the lyrics bring all the previous concepts of the verses together. I dig it.
