This is one of those things that just happened. That is, the song was written pretty much right before recording. It was intended to be a b-side for the band's single, "Surfer Joe." The idea came from one of the band members as a gimmick. He suggested the opening be preceded by the now infamous "cracking surfboard" sound and laughing "wipe out." The crazy voice was that of the band's manager.
There have been so many covers of this song over the years that there's no point in even attempting to go through all of them. In my opinion, this is THE version of the song. If you can't imitate that guitar tone, you'll never be as good as the original. Even The Beach Boys couldn't quite make it sound right.
