Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around - Roots

As much as I enjoy hip-hop on occasion, this is a brand of hip-hop I can really get on board with. The group was formed in Philly with only two members, Tariq Trotter and Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson. Leonard Hubbard, Malik B, and Josh Abrams were added to the group later. The band's music has been met with critical acclaim repeatedly, and it's easy to see why. In 2009, the group became the house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Questlove has become a household name almost, at least in houses with drummers. He's formed his own sound and style, and he's proven himself over and over to be original. He's also a DJ, so, I connect with him on several levels. I think in general drummers make good DJs, and it's not just about the rhythm and timing. Drummers tend to have an ear for producing, hearing where certain sounds and dynamics can fit in the music they're listening to or performing as a part of. We tend to, when doing our job right, fit around the rest of the sound and enhance it. It's easy to see why the transition to band leader, producer, or DJ comes easy to lots of percussionists.
