Moondance - Van Morrison

This song was the title track on an album from 1970, but Morrison didn't release it as a single until seven years later. The band plays this song more often than any other of their tunes. It's reported to have been played over 1000 times in concert by the band. In this version, we get the added experience of hearing Santana jam with the band. The other guitar solo is one of my favorite styles, too, where we get to hear the player sing and play the solo at the same time. On top of all of that, you get Dr. John on keys. What a group of players on stage together!

Letting him speak for himself, Morrison said, "With 'Moondance' I wrote the melody first. I played the melody on a soprano sax, and I knew I had a song, so, I wrote lyrics to go with the melody. That's the way I wrote that one. I don't really have any words to particularly describe the song. Sophisticated is probably the word I'm looking for. For me, 'Moondance' is a sophisticated song. Frank Sinatra wouldn't be out of place singing that."
