I honestly do like some straight up rock every now and then. Even though this wasn't the band's highest charting track, it is often considered their most popular. As the music video suggests, the song is about dealing with anger and frustration. It's just good, hard rock, no screamo or yelling or crazy stuff. It's cool too see a three piece band stay true to rock and roll roots for the most part.
The song was the debut single from the band's debut album, Wonder What's Next. While their second single, "Send the Pain Below," charted higher on the Mainstream and Modern Rock Tracks charts, "The Red" saw a higher spot on the Hot 100. That means it was a bigger crossover hit for the band, reaching a bigger audience. It topped out at #56 on that chart.
