I'm a firm believe that songs like this, "September", "We Want the Funk" and other similar tunes with heavy amounts of groove and funk could be written on just about any subject matter, and the listener would still feel like dancing while listening. For that matter, if you listen to some of the songs in the style I'm talking about, you'll notice that the topic the song covers seems like it's just whatever the band happened to be driving by at the time..."Car Wash" anyone? Regardless, the bass lines and horn parts in those songs really get to you. This one is no different.
The song was #8 hit for the group on the Hot 100 in 1981, but it feels and sounds like a seventies disco/funk tune. The song was written by William King and his wife, along with Harold Hudson, a member of The Mean Machine, the group's backing band. The Commodores was where Lionel Richie got his start, and this song would be one of the last hits the group had before Richie broke out on his own.
