In the 1940's, swing music was all the craze. Fifty years later, the 1990's saw a resurgence in the popularity of the style in what would become known as the swing revival. Groups like Squirrel Nut Zippers, The Brian Setzer Orchestra, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy would lead the charge on the front. Zoot Suit Riot would become one of the most popular songs in the movement, topping out at #41 for the band on the Hot 100.
The song is based on the Zoot Suit Riots of the 1940's, and it closely resembles the sounds of that era. The song was one of four new songs to appear on a compilation album the band released in 1997. The album was intended to be a promotional and sales tool for the group as they toured until they were able to complete their next release. Little did they know that the song would become their most successful by far.
