If this song sounds familiar and you can't figure out where you've heard it before, it may be cause you haven't ever heard it before. It, like many other classic R&B songs, was a sample for one of Will Smith's movie tunes. He does a good job paying homage to his music heroes. He's sampled greats like Rushen, Stevie Wonder, and Bill Withers, just to name a few.
The original tune was written by Rushen, Freddie Washington, and Terri McFadden. The song made it all the way to #2 on the dance charts and #4 on the R&B charts. Smith really knows how to pick the right hits for his songs. Just in case you can't remember out "Men in Black" goes, I've posted it below. The album that contained Smith's song, Men in Black: The Album, was a huge commercial success. It landed two weeks at the #1 spot on Billboard 200. The strange thing about the album is that out of sixteen tracks, only three, Smith's title song and Danny Elfman's two credits, appear in the movie.
