Sometimes it's not just the song that makes a hit; often times, it takes the right artist paired with the right song. This song was written by Donna Weiss and Jackie DeShannon in 1974, and it was then recorded by DeShannon. It wasn't until Carnes released her version in 1981 that the song became a hit, though.

There are lots of famous examples of this. One of the most popular ones people like to mention is "I Will Always Love You," as made popular by Mariah Carey. Dolly Parton had written and recorded the song previously. "Always Love You" received good remarks from the critics, and it was well received by Parton's fans. After Carey recorded it for the soundtrack to her film, The Bodyguard, it became one of the best selling female singles of all time. It was just that particular interpretation that connected with a larger audience.
