This song was written by Adams, Michael Kamen, and Robert John "Mutt" Lange. You'll recognize Lange's name, if not from his role as producer for groups like AC/CD, Def Leppard, Maroon 5, and Nickelback, for his marriage to country singer Shania Twain. Kamen is known for his orchestral scores, which include Highlander, Die Hard, Last Action Hero, and 101 Dalmatians, just to name a few. The three of them wrote the song for the film Don Juan DeMarco, and it sat at #1 on the Hot 100 for five weeks. It wasn't the first success this writing team had garnered, having two other #1's in their bag.
The version below is one of my favorite renditions of the song. Casey James and Michael Lynche were on American Idol in 2010. This was one of their duets during the semifinals round. I really like the harmony parts they create in this version. None of the judges had anything spectacular to say, but they were all fans of the performance.

Since the show, James has found is place in country music with is debut album making it all the way to #2. Lynche is currently working with Big3 Records on his debut album. The first single from the album, "Who's Gonna Love You More", has made it to #36 on the US Hot Urban AC chart.
