Following successful runs in groups like The Spencer Davis Group and Traffic, Winwood continued his career in the same direction on his own. With hits like this one and "Higher Love," Winwood saw lots of commercial success on his own. "Roll With It" spent four weeks at #1 on the Hot 100 in 1988, and it was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 1989.
Winwood is a very talented guy, obviously, playing several instruments, including guitar, keyboards, bass, drums, mandolin, and synthesizer. His work with Traffic won him an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The group I'm currently playing with does a cover of the song with a much busier horn line. I prefer it to the original, but Winwood knows what he wanted to hear. I've never heard the arrangement we play anywhere else.
