Based on lyrics from a John Lee Hooker song, "She's Not There" was the debut single for British rock band, the Zombies. It was written by the band's organist, Rod Argent. The Hooker song that inspired "She's Not There" was titled "No One Told Me." These became the opening lines for the Zombies' hit. While the Hooker song was the musical inspiration for the tune, an ex-lover of Argent's was the inspiration for the content, breaking off their engagement just weeks before the wedding.
The Zombies took the song to #2 on the Cashbox chart in 1964. It was a hit all over again for Santana in 1977. It saw the #11 spot in the UK and #21 spot in Canada. I like both versions of the song, but Santana just nails the kind of funky, out-of-time feel of the verses like only Santana can do. Plus, there's a great guitar solo in there as one might expect, and the Latin percussion breaks add a lot to the overall sound for me, too.
