Regardless of who you vote for today, most people think they're making the most patriotic decision they can. With that in mind, this is absolutely one of the most patriotic songs I can think of. The official songs of most branches of the military are marches. There is just something that's innately patriotic about a march, especially a Sousa march.
It's possible this association is built with the pairing of songs like this with the 4th of July, fireworks, and similar events. The song was, obviously, written as a patriotic song, hence the title, but even people who don't know that often make the same association. This isn't Sousa's only patriotic march. He is pretty much the master of the march, writing 136 marches during his lifetime. In 1987, this one became the official march of the United States.
