It's fairly obvious in this video that Waylon is kind of just going through the motions. Don't get me wrong; he still performs this song well, but at the same time, I'll bet it used to have some more energy and passion in it. It's hard to hold on to that energy when you play the same song(s) long enough. Even being in cover bands and playing the same songs for a year at a time, I can say from experience that you get worn out on songs pretty quickly. To be someone like Waylon, having played the same songs for years on years, has to be taxing on your ability to enjoy those songs. Regardless, the two songs in this medley are two of his most well-known hits.
Jennings was inspired to write the first song in the medley after seeing an advertisement for Ike and Tina Turner, and he wrote the song with Willie Nelson. That duo also performed the second of the two songs together often, hence Jennings' imitation of Nelson in the video above. If you're a country musician, these should definitely be in your catalog of can-play songs.
