Hallelujah - Allison Crowe

December Theme: Christmastime Again

Leonard Cohen originally wrote this song in June 1984, the month and year in which I was born. The most popular version by far is the Jeff Buckley version. Each artist has their own interpretation of the song, changing the lyrics. Even Cohen had originally conceived over eighty (80) verses for the song. It of course was never that long in any one recording. The idea is that there are many different hallelujahs to be shouted, and because of this, each artist chooses to change, sometimes slightly and sometimes pretty significantly, the lyrics of the song. I personally never really connected this tune with Christmas, but, apparently, I'm in the minority there. I'm assuming it's the religious connection that most people see.

Crowe is a Canadian singer-songwriter that plays both guitar and piano. She also owns and records on her own record label. She leads the pack in sharing her creations, too. Her music is covered under Creative Commons licensing, allowing non-commercial use of her songs.
