A Love of Your Own - Average White Band

For those of you who don't know what a "sample" is, I'll quickly explain. When an artist or group samples a song, they take a clip, section, or piece of that song, and they put it into their own work. This became increasingly popular with the rise of rap and hip-hop music. A LOT of popular rap tunes sample classic r&b or soul or whatever. For example Will Smith sampled Stevie Wonder's "I Wish" for his song "Wild, Wild West". Another example of sampling is Freddie Scott's "(You) Got What I Need"...

A lot of people will recognize that groove from the Biz Markie song "Just a Friend"...

This a good one to use as an example, because it's so obvious how it's used, and it's very easy to pick out. There are tons of examples like these!  This, in my opinion, goes to prove that all that stuff that people are dancing to now, is stuff they were dancing to fifty or more years ago.

All this to say, Average White Band is the 15th most sampled artist ever. It's obvious from this song why. Their grooves are just so hard to resist. That's ironic on it's own, because who would've thought a Scottish funk band could lay it down like they do?

If you're really interested in learning more about samples, you can check out the two videos below. The top one is one DJ's opinion on the top ten samples ever (he has a couple of part two and three follow-up videos). It's a little hard to hear him, but he's got a good selection. The bottom video is about the "Amen break", the most sampled drum break in history, basically. It's a little slow and monotonous, but very informative. To be honest, the way he did the "Amen break" video is kind of weird, very artsy.
