Though I knew it wasn't the original version, I had never heard any other take on this song other than Reba McEntire's until recently. I like the kind of Motown soul feel this one has, but I have to admit, I wish it had a little more punch behind it. Reba's version definitely has that when the chorus kicks in full swing. The verses on Reba's version are still laid back, though, and that difference between the two sections makes the song even more powerful.
The song is a tale of a girl bettering herself with the help of her poor mother. Mom is absolutely set on getting Fancy out of the living conditions they suffer. She doesn't really seem to care what it takes either. I've given you Reba's version below in a performance with Kelly Clarkson, who looks amazing in this video, for a comparison on the interpretations. Reba's version performed a little better on the country charts, but Gentry's original was a crossover hit, making decent marks on both country and pop charts.
