Snow - George Winston

This song was posted by a facebook friend of mine after our city of Huntington, WV was hit with a quick two to three inch snowfall last night. It wasn't a lot of snow, but it happened really quickly.  Personally, I could do without snow, except for Christmas, and this year we didn't get any for the holiday. You can check out the picture below from another Facebook friend of what the city looked like right after the snow began to come down.

Music can definitely elicit certain emotions, thoughts, and images from people. I think it's far easier to tap into the emotions of a person than it is to bring a certain image or thought from a person. Music, for a lot of people, is a very emotional experience in general.

A good example of this kind of imagery evoking music is Christmas music. Even music you've never heard before that has no lyrics can be picked out as Christmas music just based on the way it sounds, whether it be by familiar chord progressions or specific instrument tones and sounds. Another good example is music that makes you imagine comedic scenes. "Yakety Sax" is a great example of this.

I know that Winston is going for a piece that is representative of a winter snowfall, but I'm just not sure I make the connection. This is a hard feeling to try and capture, short of putting the words "let it snow" in your song. There are definitely instrumental pieces out there that make me picture something specific; I just don't think this one quite hits the mark.  It's a beautiful piece regardless, though.
