Lawrence had his biggest hit with this song, placing it at #1 for three weeks in 1996. He had other hits, seven others that made it to the same chart spot, but this one seemed to strike the strongest chord with listeners. Based on the lyrics and the story it tells, it's easy to see why people felt a connection to the song, especially those growing up in the same time as Lawrence and song writer Bobby Braddock. Personally my favorite part of the song is how the strumming/picking of the guitars, slow, half-not bass pattern, and simple drum track create the feel of a steady tick of a clock, appropriately.
The song was apparently supposed to go to the country duo of Brooks & Dunn, but they passed on it, which worked out well for Lawrence. I think he does a fine job with the song, but I can also really hear B & D doing this, too. It's reminiscent of their hit "Neon Moon". Braddock has written thirteen hit singles for different artists, including one of Lawrence's other big songs, "Texas Tornado". He's also the man responsible for one of the biggest country songs of all time, "He Stopped Loving Her Today", famously recorded by George Jones.
