I've posted from Parnell on a couple of other occasions (see below), and I was even contacted by one of his representatives in one post. It's hard for me to pick one of his songs that's my favorite. This song is easily one of the tops, though. It's not only a great song, but it transcends genres.

If one were to attempt to classify this song, many would say country, just because that's the genre Parnell is placed in most of the time. What makes this country, though? Well, the story, the content, both go a long way in that. The instrumentation makes its kind of country, with steel guitar swells throughout, but Parnell's playing, riffs and licks, are kind of more like blues. The bass and drum mix, particularly the sharp cross stick, make it almost Rn'B. The way the lyrics and music fit together so tight make it sound like an adult contemporary hit. I don't think you can really box it into one space.

The song appeared on his 1993 album, On the Road. The title track was used as the theme for a CMT show of the same name and reached #6 on the charts, followed by another top ten hit, "I'm Holding My Own", that made it to #3. "Power of Love" failed to break the top forty, stopping at #51. All the songs are great, but this is by far my favorite. The album is excellent overall, though.
