The Power of Love - Huey Lewis & The News

Theme: Power of Love

What better way to start off the theme of this month than with a song that shares the name of the theme. I've posted a version of this song once before, and I've actually avoided posting Lewis's original version, because I just assume that everyone has heard this song. However, it's recently come to my attention that my assumption may be incorrect.

There was a trend for a long time when blockbuster movies seemed to always be accompanied by a hit song on their soundtrack. Top Gun had "Danger Zone", The Bodyguard had "I Will Always Love You", and Back to the Future had "The Power of Love". For me, I can't think of either Lewis's song or the 80's film classic without the other crossing my mind.

The movie was released in 1985, the same year in which it is set. The song was written and recorded specifically for the film, and it was the group's first #1. A handful of cover versions have been recorded, but none of them really live up to the original in my opinion. The production of the track was absolutely spot-on. Every minor detail of the recorded version is near perfect. I think, beyond nostalgia, the production quality of this song is probably what makes it one of my all-time favorites. Every piece fits together like a puzzle.
