Stand Out - Tevin Campbell

April Theme: Big & Small Screen Music

I just watched A Goofy Movie again for the first time in a long time, and I was reminded of what a great soundtrack it has. This song was written and recorded for the movie. Originally, Bobby Brown had been scheduled to perform the voice work for the film's fictional pop star, Powerline. Due to drug problems, however, Brown was pulled from the film. His replacement was singer Tevin Campbell, who performed this song and another, "I 2 I".

Both songs are pretty typical of the sound of pop music from the mid nineties. This was a time when the demographic that was watching this movie was also listening to bands like N'Sync and Backstreet Boys. When I heard the song again in the movie, I actually had to wonder if it was Justin Timberlake singing. It fits right into the vein of music that was really popular. Plus, with a line like "if the sticky wheel's always gettin' the grease, I'm totally devoted to disturbin' the peace". how can you not dig it?

The clip at the top of the post is pulled directly from the movie. The one below is the full song with movie scenes intertwined. In the upper clip, you're offered two performances of the song. The first is at the school assembly, the second afterward when school is out. Max Goof has a very Ferris Bueller trip home from school, singing a reprise of the full song.
