Morricone often collaborated with director Sergio Leone. Morricone has written more than 500 pieces, but this one stands out among the rest due to its extremely distinct sound. It's instantly recognizable within the first few notes. It was so well orchestrated for the film that it is used several times throughout, including a representation of each character through a different instrument playing the melody.
Sometimes some of the most memorable themes are the simplest. Looking at movie themes, Jaws, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and The Pink Panther all have extremely memorable music, and each of them is composed fairly simply. Of course, each of them becomes more complicated as the song progresses, but the part people remember are the simple moments. They're catchy, and people like catchy.
