California Girls - The Beach Boys

There are two very well known versions of this song. The version above (the original) was cut and released in 1965, having been written by band member Brian Wilson who got the idea for the song while on an LSD trip. The later version, covered by David Lee Roth in 1985, was a pretty close cover, but it did have Roth's own spin on it. Regardless of their differences in interpretation, both songs topped out at #3 on the charts.

Signing with Capital Records in 1962, The Beach Boys grew to become an American legend. The group's most popular sound centered around surfabilly, but they began their career writing about hot rods. Songs like "Surfin' USA," "Little Surfer Girl," and "Get Around" have become staples in American music. The group had thirty-six songs chart in the Top 40 in America and over eighty hits world wide.

I became familiar with the group as a kid. At the time, I was just interested in the upbeat, fun music. As I got older, I focused more on the music's technical aspects and, more importantly, the harmonies. My first real taste for the group and the thing that really turned me on to them more seriously was, oddly enough, their appearance on the sit-com, Full House. It was a regularly watched program in my house and millions of others across America.

Actor John Stamos, who portrayed Uncle Jesse on the show, is a musician and became friends with the band, which lead to several appearances by the band on the show. Stamos has even gone on tour with the group as their drummer. The clip below is one of the scenes in which you can see the band on the show.
