This song was imagined during the exact situation it describes. Williams, who wrote and performed the song, was inspired during a date with a girl. He was trying to convince her to stay out later than the 10:00 PM curfew she had been given by her parents. He claims the words just flooded his mind after he began writing. At a length of only 1:38, it's a pretty short tune compared to its contemporaries.
That shortened length didn't keep it from becoming a mainstay. It entered the charts in 1960, reaching the #1 spot in less than a month, and has been covered several times. It was quickly pushed out a week after making it to the top by the King of Rock and Roll's "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" The song has also made a number of appearances in the movies. One of the more famous appearances is in Dirty Dancing.
