It's so funny how just a little change in a song can make it so much different. The original cut of this song by Sam and Dave was quite a bit quicker. In the cover above, TOP decides to slow it down a little bit and make it a little funkier. I like this a lot better. Plus, the harmonies on the "I thank you" line are great.
On the other side of things, ZZ Top covered the song, too, putting their signature spin on it. It makes it a bit more blues guitar oriented (obviously), and they mix a little southern rock sound in there. It's a good take on the song, too, and its' those little changes that make a huge difference.
The original recording was the final release Sam & Dave would have with Stax records. Written by David Porter and Isaac Hayes, it was released in 1968, reaching #9 on the Pop Singles chart and #4 on the R&B chart. Similarly, ZZ Top's cover took the #34 spot on the Pop Singles chart. It was their second Top 40 hit.
