Man of Constant Sorrow - Blackberry Smoke

Sometimes a cover comes along that throws you for a loop. I thought for sure this was going to fill out into a halftime groove, a la "Good Hearted Woman". Needless to say they took it a different way. More over, I like that they stuck "Dueling Banjos" on the beginning of the tune. While I do miss the ridiculous harmonies of the original tune, I enjoy the southern rock take the band puts on it, even though, at times, it sounds a bit too much like "Keep Your Hands to Yourself".

The original song was written and recorded by Dick Burnett, a partially-blind fiddler from Kentucky, in 1913. Today, most people know the song as performed by the Soggy Bottom Boys from the film O Brother, Where Art Thou. In the film, which was loosely based on Homer's Odyssey, the song is recorded by some of the main characters. The soundtrack for the film won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2001. If you haven't heard the movie version, check it out below. The song is performed on film by George Clooney, with backups provided by the rest of the gang. The music was recorded by Dan Tyminski, Harley Allen, and Pat Enright.
