Kelsey Grammar portrayed the character of Frasier Crane for twenty years. The character originated on Cheers in 1984 and took on his own spin-off series, Frasier, after Cheers ended its eleven season run on NBC. Though Grammar has had several other notable roles in film and on stage, including a performance as Hank McCoy (X-Men's Beast) in X-Men: The Last Stand, which I can't imagine a better casting choice for, he is still best remembered for his role as Dr. Frasier Crane. In fact, he ties the actor James Amess, who portrayed Marshall Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke, for longest portrayal of a TV character. One other actor looks to surpass that mark. Richard Belzer has been portraying Detective John Munch since 1993 on Homicide: Life on the Streets and more recently Law & Order: SVU.
The theme song for Frasier is performed vocally by Grammar. Though he is shown playing the piano several times in both shows on which he was a regular character, Grammar was mimicking playing. He is however, an excellent vocalist. There was another version of the song recorded, and you can hear it below. I personally prefer the version that filled in as the show's actual theme song, even though you heard it during the closing credits, not at the opening of the show, which is the case for most series.
